State to set up 'Cancer Day Care Center' in every district

The central government recently announced in the budget to start a day care center for cancer patients in every district. Following that, the Public Health Department has decided to start day care centers for cancer patients in every district of the state in the next one to two days. Against this backdrop, day care centers will be started in six districts of the state on the occasion of World Cancer Day, thus bringing relief to cancer patients in the state.


On the occasion of World Cancer Day, 'State Level Cancer Screening and Awareness Campaign' will be implemented in the state under the concept of Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar. During this campaign, it is aimed to screen people above 30 years of age in Maharashtra for oral, breast and cervical cancer. Under this campaign, a program will be implemented at the local and district level to provide free treatment to all cancer patients diagnosed in the state. Day care facilities will be provided to cancer patients during this treatment.

Presently there are day care centers in 14 districts in the state. Therefore, day care centers will be started in all the districts in the next one to two months so that day care facilities are available to the patients in the rest of the districts. The Department of Public Health has informed that day care chemotherapy centers for cancer patients will be started in six districts namely Thane, Solapur, Ahilyanagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, Wardha.


Emphasis on public awareness

The Health Department has given instructions that for the success of the 'State Level Cancer Screening and Awareness Campaign' all District Surgeons, District Health Officers, Medical Health Officers (MHPs) should coordinate with each other and create public awareness about cancer among the citizens through radio, newspapers, cable etc. Also, instructions have been given to involve private organisations such as Indian Medical Association (IMA), Indian Dental Association (IDA), Rotary Club, Lions Club, Maharashtra Cancer Warriors.
