States must consider providing mortuary services: Governor's instruction to health department

If the patient dies and no hearse is available to carry the dead body, the relatives of the patient in rural areas have to reluctantly carry the dead body. At such a time, no matter how good the health services are in the state, all the good work is watered down. Therefore, Governor Ramesh Bais suggested that the state should seriously consider providing mortuary services to transport the dead.

Governor Bais was speaking at the Raj Bhavan at a detailed review of various schemes of the State Public Health Department. State Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Tanaji Sawant was present on this occasion.

Stating that he has the responsibility to pay attention to the development of the scheduled areas of the state according to the fifth schedule of the constitution, the governor suggested to inform about how effectively the health schemes are being benefited in the scheduled areas. The governor said that the state should have a separate sub-division to look after 'sickle cell' disease. The governor also suggested that the distribution of Ayushman cards and other health insurance cards to the beneficiaries should be expedited.

There are vacancies for specialist doctors in rural and remote areas. Considering the fact that specialist doctors are not willing to work in rural areas, the Health Minister said that he has proposed to give them additional incentive allowance, Tanaji Sawant said on this occasion.

Additional Chief Secretary Public Health Milind Mhaiskar and Commissioner Health Services Dheeraj Kumar gave an elaborate presentation on Health Infrastructure and Indicators in Maharashtra, Achievements of Health Department, Major decisions taken by the Department, Special Initiatives to reduce child and maternal mortality in Melghat, National Health Mission, Ayushman Bharat, Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Programme, Pradhan Mantri TB Mukta Bharat Abhiyan, Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services project, etc.
