Thane active COVID-19 cases cross 3,000 mark; 493 people test positive

As the state of Maharashtra tries to grapple with the coronavirus, the COVID-19 situation in Thane seems to be getting more serious with every passing day.

On Wednesday, March 17, 493 people tested positive for the coronavirus, 370 on Tuesday, 304 on Monday, 328 on Sunday, and 338 on Saturday whereas 185 people recovered and two people succumbed to the disease. The overall death toll now stands at 1,355. After reporting over 300 cases for four consecutive days, the city has seen a spike of nearly 500 new cases. 

Even though the death rate has been low, with the addition of fresh patients, the active cases have crossed the 3,041 mark for the first time since October 20, 2020. Earlier on February 18, the active cases were 998, however, in a month's period, it has seen a spike of over 2,000 cases.

According to reports, Majiwada-Manpada, Naupada-Kopri, Uthalsar, and Wagale areas have been reporting the maximum number of new cases among the nine prabhag areas. Moreover, for the second time in less than a week, the Majiwada-Manpada area reported over 100 cases with 144 people testing positive on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Vartak Nagar and Naupada-Kopri areas saw a surge of 74 cases each whereas the Wagale area reported 49 cases, followed by 44 in Lokmanya-Savarkar, 42 in Uthalsar and 34 in Kalwa. Meanwhile, Mumbra, which saw zero new cases on Tuesday, reported 16 new cases, while Diva reported 13 cases. Three new cases were reported out of Thane's jurisdiction.

In view of the situation, the TMC has imposed a stringent lockdown in a total of 16 hotspots.
