The King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, Mumbai has decided not to start trials for the vaccine for the novel coronavirus, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University after a participant in the trial had an “adverse event” in the United Kingdom (UK).

The KEM hospital in Mumbai is one of the 10 centres across the country that were to host the phase one and phase two trials of Covishield, the potential drug to treat the coronavirus which has been developed in Oxford University. In the first stage conducted at the U.K, the clinical efficacy was proven to be safe with minimal side effects.

The hospital was expected to initiate the trials on September 11 after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had selected two civic-run hospitals, BYL Nair being the other one in the city to conduct the trials.
