Thane's road network is set for a upgrade, with projects like the Vadpe-Majiwada highway expansion and new underpasses under construction. The goal is to ease congestion and improve connectivity across the city.
Here are the undergoing projects:
Mumbai-Nashik Highway Expansion
The Vadpe-Majiwada expansion of the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway is nearing completion. The project will turn the congested roadways in Thane into an eight-lane highway. It stretches 23.8 kilometers and includes two-lane service roads on both sides.
New Vehicle Underpasses
Furthermore, 10 vehicle underpasses are being constructed to reduce traffic congestion caused by heavy commercial vehicles. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has stated that the underpasses are designed to address traffic problems from large freight vehicles, especially those coming from Bhiwandi's warehouses.
As per reports, commuters often face long delays and frequent jams along this stretch. The underpasses will make sure travel is smoother for vehicles. The underpasses are being built at Walshin, Sonale, Kharegaon, Yewali Flyover, Saravali, Pimplas, Ovali, Mankoli Motagaon, Dive Gaon at the Petrol Pump, and Dive. They are expected to be completed in May.
Bridges and Flyovers
In addition to the underpasses, three significant bridges and a flyover are part of the project. These include the Kasheli Creek Bridge, which spans 817.5 meters, the Kalwa Creek Bridge at 199 meters, and the 320-meter Vadpe Flyover. A railway bridge measuring 84.15 meters is also being constructed.
Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway
The completion of the final 76 kilometers of the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway complements this expansion. This section connects Igatpuri to Thane and includes a 4.2-kilometer spur to the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway. The spur is nearly complete, with over 98% of the work finished.
The new spur will cut travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. Once integrated with the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway, it will further improve regional connectivity. The Vadpe-Majiwada project and Samruddhi Mahamarg are also expected to improve economic activity along the route.
The project is on track for completion soon. As per the MSRDC's plan, the high-speed design will make travel more convenient.
