A major fire broke in an old fruit and vegetable market in Pune on Tuesday morning, March 16, destroying 25 shops at the Cantonment Board’s Shivaji Market in Camp. Out of these 25 shops, 17 were of fish sellers and eight chicken shops were gutted completely.

According to reports, no person was injured in the incident. However, the traders’ association has estimated the loss at around INR 40 lakhs.

As soon as the incident was reported, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s fire department sent nine water tankers there and the blaze was doused in 40 minutes. A total of eight vehicles from the Pune cantonment and PMC fire brigade teams were roped in to control the fire.

The incident took place around 3.50 am and the fire was completely doused by 4.30 am. The Lashkar police station officials suspect an electric short circuit as the cause behind this fire incident. However, Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) officials ruled out the short-circuit theory behind the fire.

After a preliminary inspection, it is understood that there was a problem in the deep freezer and its compressor burst which caught fire. There is a lot of plastic and the roof structure is made up of wood which caused the spread of fire rapidly.

A team of Pune Cantonment Fire Brigade comprising Officer Prakash Hasbe, Tandel Asif Sheikh, Firemen Anil Tajne, Pramod Chavan, Sachin Bhagat, Prasad Borate, Nikhil Jagtap, Pankaj Rasal, Driver Balaji Dhakpade and Jeevan Jagtap reached the spot and doused the fire.
