A beautification project to transform Cuffe Parade’s Macchimar Nagar, one of the oldest fishing villages in Mumbai, is underway. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Koliwada beautification project will see the addition of a promenade, an organised space for parking boats, gazebos, and other elements to improve the infrastructure of the area. The project is intended to celebrate the heritage of the Koli community, the first inhabitants of Mumbai, and boost local tourism. The BMC commenced work on the first phase of the beautification project in January this year after razing illegal encroachments in February.

A detailed report was published in the Indian Express.

Improving the infrastructure of Macchimar Nagar

The fishing village has remained under the shadows of its more popular counterparts due to its poor infrastructure and civic amenities. The aim of the project is to showcase the rich heritage of the indigenous community and build employment opportunities for the locals. The first phase of the beautification project will include a new entrance, a pathway leading to a promenade, a seating area with a viewing deck, and murals adorned with light and art installations highlighting the Koli culture. A more organised parking space for boats is also being developed.

Harshita Narwekar, a former corporator spearheading the project, explained that the intervention was needed to beautify the space, showcase the Koli culture, and provide locals with a recreational area. If the beautification project turns out to be a success, it can be replicated in all the fishing colonies of Mumbai.

Estimated cost and future plans

The beautification project is estimated to cost Rs 3 crores and will also see the development of the Badhwar Park. The second phase of the beautification plan, as part of which a community centre will be developed, is slated to commence soon.

Proposed Makeover in Thane

At the end of 2022, Thane's civic officials confirmed that several parts of the city were set to receive a significant facelift with colourful paintings and other embellishments in all prominent locations. The city's bridges, subways, lakes, and underpasses were also planned to be illuminated with lights, while murals will be installed at the entry and exit points to provide a pleasant view for visitors. The beautification project, expected to cost INR 100 crores, were funded by the state government's urban development department.
