The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) widened a 500-metre road in Malad East's P Northward to start the first phase of the Kandivali Lokhandwala to Goregaon (East) connectivity project on Monday, February 26.

The project aims to make a 2.1-kilometre route connecting Kandivali Lokhandwala to the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Goregaon East. This new link will also provide an additional route to Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR), facilitating access to the eastern suburbs.

The project will necessitate changes to local structures. A total of 1376 structures will be affected, with 71 located in the forest and the others on BMC land. The road will go through the forest for approximately 860 metres.

The new link will have 120-foot-wide concrete roadways and bridges. To make way for the new link, 168 structures were demolished on Monday. Under the direction of BMC engineers, more than fifty BMC workers participated in the demolition operation, which made use of two poclains, two JCBs, and four dumpers.

From the 168, 107 structures are eligible for rehabilitation. The displaced residents have been relocated to nearby communities in Goregaon (East) and Malad (East).

The new road will provide an alternate route for Kandivali residents. It will connect Lokhandwala Township to Malad Reservoir and Goregaon East. The project is expected to significantly alleviate commuter burdens.
