Considering the traffic congestion in Andheri (East), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to open two lanes of Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge by May 31. However, the civic body will be able to work on the new bridge only after the railway administration demolishes it by February.

Therefore, the municipality has called a coordination meeting on February 7 to discuss some aspects of demolition. An important connector in Andheri East, the bridge has been closed for pedestrian and vehicular traffic from November 7, 2022.

Meanwhile, the railway approved the design of this bridge on Tuesday, January 31. The BMC is pre-fabricating the structure, which will be brought from the workshop for final assembling and launching of girders at the site.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) P Velrasu visited the spot along with Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Kaudnyapure on Thursday, February 2.

An official said, “Of the 80-metre rail section of the bridge, the contractor has demolished about 30 meters in two months. BMC has completed 70% of the approach road on the north side of the bridge. The municipality has not been able to start work there as the demolition of the structures on the southern side has not yet been taken up. Also, the curved shape of the bridge is affecting the girder launching.”

Velrasu said the railways must complete their work before February. "BMC contractors will have to do some more planning as the bridge is curved, which may affect the girder launching process."
