The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated immediate repair works at 18 roads in M/East ward comprising Govandi and Mankhurd.

This development came after several complaints by Govandi netizens about damaged portions alongside the Deonar dumping ground road.

According to local activists, several citizens injured themselves in the multiple potholes on the stretch.

The civic body had commenced repair works in December 2022 with the administration partially completing works and making the roads motor-able before monsoon onset.

In the first phase of improvement work of road side storm water drain was completed and then utilities duct was laid in the side strip. However, Faiyaz Shaikh of Govandi Citizen Welfare Forum said that despite repair works commencing in December 2022, the roads remain riddled with potholes with several manhole covers missing.

The work of improvement of the carriageway started by the end of April 2023, read a letter issued by senior BMC officials.

The civic body maintained that the condition of road deteriorated due to use of JCB for lifting garbage. Officials claimed that anti-social elements have broken the chamber cover of utility ducts and drains in a bid to steal the covers. As a precautionary measure, the ward level has covered the chambers and drains with a thick layer of concrete.
