Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is touted to start a project in a bid to prevent the overflow of Vihar lake in the Mithi river. This is touted to bring relief to the residents of Kurla region who suffer from flooding due to the monsoons every year.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the civic body has contacted a consultant to plan out the feasibility of constructing a tunnel that would take the excess water to the Bhandup Complex Water Treatment Plant or Airoli creek.

The residents of Kranti Nagar, Bail Bazaar and Taximen’s Colony suffer from waterlogging every monsoon as the Mithi river overflows. Since the width and depth of the Mithi river have reduced over the years, the water floods the areas around. In some instances, the floodwater has even entered the airport’s runway at Santacruz which has in return disrupted the operations. Moreover, an overflowing Mithi river also cripples the Railway’s western, central and harbour lines, and submerges areas like Sion, Chunabhatti and Matunga.

On the other hand, the BMC was earlier reportedly considering the construction of floodgates or a small dam at the front of the Mahim Causeway. This decision was taken as a result of flooding in regions like Sion, Chunabhatti and Kurla. According to the officials, the idea behind the proposal was to prevent the entry of the seawater into Mithi River, particularly during high tides.
