The Maharashtra government has made an 8-member committee to develop a master plan for a smart tunnel network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The master plan for this network system will be funded by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The committee is tasked with selecting locations for transportation tunnels, determining construction phases based on future traffic predictions, incorporating utility corridors into tunnel plans, assessing environmental impact, setting a construction schedule, and creating a budget roadmap.

According to reports, the goal of this "multi-model tunnel project" is to make transportation easy through a smart double deck system. This includes building a network of tunnels that can be used to drain floodwater during monsoon season, thus reducing flooding.

The committee will be led by the municipal commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), who will serve as president. The vice president will be the metropolitan commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The member secretary will also be a Municipal Commissioner (Project).

Other members include BMC's chief engineer for bridges, chief accounts officer for finance, and deputy municipal commissioner for infrastructure. The group will also include chief engineers from MMRDA and MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation).

Several infrastructure projects are currently underway in Mumbai with the aim of improving travel within the city and enhancing connectivity to MMR. These include the coastal road and the Mumbai-Trans Harbour Link Project. Construction is also underway on Mumbai Metro projects, which will improve connectivity between the city and its suburbs as well as between east and west.
