After the success on trains, bio-toilets will now also be seen at all suburban stations. The Central Railway now plans to construct bio-compost restrooms for women at suburban stations of Mumbai and the work would be completed in the next three months. These toilets will be first installed at Mulund, Nahur, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar, Govandi and Mankhurd railway station.

Jitendra Gupta of Mumbai Transport Forum said that it is now to be seen how bio-toilets will be implemented by the system at the stations.

Bio-toilets help to decompose waste. They have a bio-digester, which helps to decompose waste in the digester tank using high-grade bacteria. The bio-digester requires no maintenance and can also function in the absence of a sewage system.

According to sources, the major complaint related to these toilets on trains has been that commuters misuse them. Often they are found clogged with bottles, cigarette butts, gutka packets and sanitary napkins. The authorities have also received complaints related to insufficient water pressure. However, divisional officials said that the problems related to the toilets were being fixed and they were also being upgraded.

The existing bio-toilets will be upgraded to bio-vacuum ones, which are used in aircrafts. These toilets are very environment-friendly and help to save a huge amount of water as they function with suction pumps. Trials of bio-vacuum toilets will be conducted soon by the Railways.
