The city of Mumbai has several statues and drinking water fountains which were built decades ago. With an aim to maintain the same, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Monday, November 15, 2021, decided to assign a budget of INR 1.9 crore for the maintenance of the same.

An agency has been finalized for the same and has been given the responsibility to upkeep these structures. The contract has been given for the next three years, stated an Indian Express report.

Additional information stated that activities like daily cleaning, scientific cleaning of fountains, maintenance, repair works, etc. have been included in the contract drafted by civic body’s Heritage Department. Maintenance work as per the mentioned guidelines will begin soon after the work order is issued by the BMC.

As of now, the city has over 39 drinking water fountains and 30 statues which were made over five decades ago. Data reveals that many fountains are more than 100 years old, however, they were not maintained or cleaned regularly.

Besides this, the civic body has also approved a budget of INR 1.22 crore for the cycle track to be constructed around the Mahalaxmi racecourse. Officials expect to complete the project in the next four months. Moreover, INR 1600 crore will also be spent as mentioned in the Development Plan 2034 for the redevelopment of roads in the city. Furthermore, the civic body has also proposed projects to boost several lifestyle and infrastructure-related aspects in the city.
