In the latest update, the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) has handed over 27.6 acres of land to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).

On March 13, the DRP received the land from the RLDA. The land includes a scrapyard site near the Mahim railway station. The land will be part of the project that required 45 acres from RLDA. It will be turned into modern housing and recreational facilities for railway workers.

Additionally, qualifying Dharavi residents will receive rehabilitation flats. The DRP is a state government agency and is responsible for the project. DRP will cover 600 acres and houses for 12 lakh people. The complex will feature four multi-story apartment buildings. It will also have a sports and recreation complex and an administrative building.

The DRP has given INR 1,000 crore for the land to the railways. It will pay an additional INR 2,800 crore as minimum income sharing from the profits of the Dharavi redevelopment after 17 years.

DRP has received possession of the land and stated that the remaining portion would be received soon. The complex, designed by architect Hafeez Contractor, will be built across one million square feet within three years of receiving the commencement certificate.

Sanjeev Jain, Deputy General Manager of RLDA, confirmed the agreement on the updated development layout plan in a letter to the Deputy Chief Engineer of DRP. The letter stated that the land would be handed over post-noon on March 12, 2024. But the land will exclude the railway operations area.

The Adani Group won the contract to revamp Dharavi with an initial equity investment of INR 5,069 crore in November 2022. The state government and the Union Ministry of Railways agreed on the transfer of more than 45 acres in 2019, and the final agreement was signed on October 18, 2022.
