The ongoing redevelopment of Dharavi has encountered fresh challenges as attempts to clear Sector 6 before the monsoon season have been met with resistance from a significant number of residents. The relocation exercise, which was initiated in April, was intended to prepare the area for the construction of rehabilitation buildings under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. However, progress has been reported as slower than expected due to disagreements over relocation terms and housing entitlements.

Approximately 22,000 residents are expected to be affected by the clearance process in Sector 6, an area spread across nearly 35 acres of Matunga Railway Land. Several settlements, including Meghwadi, SVP Nagar, Azad Nagar, Kamla Raman Nagar, and Shahu Nagar, have been included within the redevelopment zone. Evacuation notices have been issued across these localities as preparations for redevelopment activities have been accelerated ahead of the monsoon.

Particular attention has been drawn to Shahu Nagar, where notices were recently served to nearly 900 households. Residents have been offered either temporary accommodation in MHADA buildings located in Sector 5 or monthly rental assistance. Financial support ranging from ₹22,000 to ₹30,000 per month has been proposed, depending on the size of the existing residence, while relocation allowances have also been promised.

Despite these measures, concerns have continued to be expressed by residents. Demands for larger rehabilitation homes have been raised, especially by occupants of planned housing structures. Although revised government provisions have enabled eligible residents to receive homes measuring at least 500 square feet, requests for substantially larger units have reportedly been made. Negotiations between project authorities and resident groups have therefore been prolonged.

Resistance has also been observed in other parts of Sector 6. While agreements have reportedly been signed by some residents in Meghwadi, relocation discussions have continued in Azad Nagar, SVP Nagar, and Kamla Raman Nagar. Support for the broader redevelopment vision has generally been acknowledged, but dissatisfaction with transit arrangements has remained a major obstacle.

Concerns have particularly been focused on the rental compensation being offered during the transition period. It has been argued by residents that the proposed rental assistance is insufficient for securing accommodation in central Mumbai, where housing costs remain significantly higher. Additional concerns have been expressed regarding the location of alternative accommodation, which has been described as being far from existing homes, schools, workplaces, and community networks.

As the monsoon season approaches, efforts are continuing to be made by project authorities to persuade residents to relocate voluntarily. Discussions are being held across affected neighbourhoods, and further negotiations are expected in the coming weeks. While the redevelopment project is regarded as one of Mumbai's most ambitious urban renewal initiatives, its implementation is increasingly being shaped by the challenge of balancing redevelopment objectives with the expectations and concerns of existing residents.
