Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut announced the state’s ‘Mission Oxygen’ campaign which will see Maharashtra State Power Generation Company’s (MAHAGENCO) thermal power generators producing medical oxygen via existing ozonization plants and refill up to 1,454 jumbo cylinders every day.

This will boost the state’s oxygen production capacity while aiding government hospitals across the state. A single jumbo cylinder can hold close to seven cubic metres of oxygen. MAHAGENCO is owned by the State and has multiple thermal power stations in Maharashtra.

The plants will be situated in Parli, Koradi, Khaparkheda, and Paras with the ability to produce up to 95 per cent pure medical oxygen each day. A TOI report says that standard electricity generation work will not be impacted due to this change.

“In the first phase, the new Parli power station has set up an oxygen plant at Swami Ramanand Tirtha rural hospital in Ambejogai with a capacity of 288 jumbo cylinders per day and 95.2% purity. With the commissioning of this plant on April 27, Covid patients in Parli-Beed and neighbouring areas have already benefited,” a MAHAGENCO official said.

In Phase 2, the Khaparkheda Power Station will have the capacity to generate oxygen at up to 42 cubic metres per hour while the Paras Power Station will produce 50 cubic metres of oxygen per hour.

“The government has also imported the latest technology compressors, filters and other essentials machinery from abroad. At Koradi, we plan to produce a record 1,002 jumbo oxygen cylinders per day,” the official added.

As for the timeline of this project, the official said, “Mahagenco has started the process to complete the construction of this oxygen plant within the next one to one and a half months.”

“We plan to supply 1,002 jumbo cylinders per day through Koradi power station, 128 cylinders per day through Paras power station, and Parli power will produce 216 cylinders of oxygen,” the official went on to say.
