Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, inaugurated the final and second phase of the Kopri bridge widening project, which is set to revolutionise the transportation experience of the state's citizens. The Eastern Express Highway stretch, which connects Mumbai and Thane, has now increased its number of lanes, providing much-needed relief to the traffic.

The project, which was executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), was done at the expense of INR 258 crore. The first phase of the project started in 2018, which involved the construction of four lanes on either side of the old bridge. The old bridge was then modified, and the additional four lanes were constructed. The MMRDA funded the expenses of widening the 784-metre long and 37.04-metre wide bridge, including the portions of the bridge over the railway crossing, which were constructed by Central Railway and funded by the MMRDA.

The congested traffic caused by the four-lane bridge will finally come to an end with the widening of the bridge. The project also involved the construction of a four-lane vehicular underpass, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time for vehicles crossing the stretch. Additionally, a new Kopri station has been proposed, providing a convenient mode of transportation for commuters.
