In Mumbai's Girgaon area, a memorial pillar will be installed soon in remembrance of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj. It is the same place where the famous reformer had died.

After Sahu Maharaj passed away on May 6, 1922, at the Panhala Lodge palace, efforts were made to build the memorial over there. The land was later sold to a trust, where a high-rise building was constructed.

Historians, which are led by the Kolhapur guardian minister Satej Patil met the state tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray, on Wednesday, October 6. They agreed on setting up the memorial pillar in Girgaon. Shahu Maharaj is considered the 'Rashtra Purush.' It is the government's policy to set up a memorial for them, said Historian Indrajit Sawant, while addressing the same.

He further added that even though the Panhala Lodge building does not exist, anymore they do expect a memorial pillar to be set up at the place. Shahu Maharaj took his last breaths over there while his last rites were performed in the city with thousands of people present over there.

Indrajit Sawant had accompanied Satej Patil to meet Aditya Thackeray. Death centenary of Shahu Maharaj is celebrated between May 6, 2020, and May 6, 2021, and if the pillar is built this year, it would be like a tribute to him, added Sawant.
