On December 24, Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to provide the lease tenants at Panvel with houses and issue a lottery for the 8000 houses. Accordingly, MHADA Vice President Milind Mhaiskar stated that the lottery of 8000 houses would be issued soon which will be a gift for the mill workers.

The Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) had decided that they will issue the lottery by January 2019. However, as per the Bombay High Court order, the housing board has been directed to initially sort and scrutinise the applications and later issue the lottery. Therefore, if the housing board announces the lottery, then it would be a violation of the court’s order. Thus, the mill workers’ union has decided to protest against MHADA’s decision.

The government has been thriving to provide the mill workers with affordable houses. Accordingly, they had handed over the responsibility to construct the houses to MMRDA. However, after the housing authority failed to construct the houses after which, the chief minister ordered MMRDA to issue the lottery within 15 days.

However, if the housing authority does not scrutinise the applications prior to issuing the lottery, then they would be violating the high court’s order. Therefore, MHADA has made no official announcement till now and as soon as the announcement will be made, the union will resolve their decision accordingly.
