The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on Thursday, October 8, announced that the much-touted project Mumbai-Nagpur expressway is to be ready for vehicular movement by May 2022.

The MSRDC also stated that once the expressway is functioning completely, people can travel between the capital of the state to Nagpur in just eight hours. As per reports, Radheshyam Mopalwar, vice-chairman and managing director stated that until now, 152.17km-stretch of work has been completed for the 701-km corridor.

According to the Hindustan Times, the expressway will be made operational in three stages. Around 520km between Nagpur and Shirdi will be operational by May 1, 2021, as part of Phase-1 whereas another 100km-work will be finished in the following six months by December 2021, making the stretch between Shirdi and Igatpuri functional.

On the other hand, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was earlier reportedly considering a 500-km long Greenfield Konkan expressway. The authorities had submitted a request to appoint consultancy services for this project and offered a detailed feasibility report on the same.

Back in March this year, it was reported that the MSRDC is planning to construct a six-lane elevated highway near the Sion-Panvel highway in a bid to reduce the traffic flow in the region. While the outbreak of the coronavirus put a hold on most infrastructure projects, civic authorities have resumed working on essential projects with proper precautions and sanitization.
