South Mumbai’s thickly-populated and decrepit Bhendi Bazaar cluster, reached a milestone of completing its first phase with a fifth of the residents in its scope moving into two tall towers.

With an aim to redevelop South Mumbai's vibrant, but congested Bhendi Bazaar, into a modern living and workspace for its residents, SBUT's ambitious redevelopment project comprising 16.5 acres of landform has approximately 250 existing buildings, 1250 shops and 3200 families.

Saifee Burhani Upliftment Project (SBUT), a non-profit organization, is behind the Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment Project, Mumbai’s largest urban renewal scheme.

It is established by Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the high priest of the Dawoodi Bohra community. The Bohris form about 85 per cent of the population of Bhendi Bazaar.

Out of this – in 2020, 610 families and 128 businesses were rehabilitated into two towers, ‘Al Sa’adah’ across one acre of land, replacing 13 unsafe buildings – thereby completing Phase 1 of the project.

After the long halt in operations amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, SBUT has acquired the Commencement Certificate for Phase 2 of the project as well and has begun construction for the same. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2025.

A key aspect of the urban renewal of the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project is to generate more employment opportunities and wider socio-economic benefits for the people in the area and beyond. The modernized infrastructure which now comprises of the new age technology systems and facilities will aid growth and open new avenues for the businesses in the area. The area is on the path of becoming livelier with Mumbai's first organized high street shopping experience.

Moreover, the new complex has proved especially life-saving during the coronavirus pandemic, providing the residents with a safe and hygienic environment to live in.
