The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is preparing to open five infrastructure projects in the city over the next two weeks. Authorities are also considering opening all five projects to the public on a single day during the first half of June. The final date has not yet been decided.
The projects are:
1. Extension of Metro Line 2B to Chembur Naka
The reopening of the monorail will happen with the extension of Metro Line 2B by one station. The metro corridor will now run from Diamond Garden to Chembur Naka. This will create an interchange point between the metro and monorail systems at Chembur Naka.
The safety inspection for the Metro Line 2B extension has already been completed by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety. Officials of the Mumbai Monorail Operations Company Limited (MMMOCL) expect the interchange to help increase passenger numbers on the metro route.
2. Second phase of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR)
Another project nearing completion is the second phase of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. Construction on this section has been underway for around 13 years. The final arm of the project is a 1.9-kilometre elevated corridor connecting the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) with Vakola through the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus.
The way heading towards BKC will connect with the Vakola flyover. The lane moving towards Santacruz will link with the second deck of the SCLR cable-stayed bridge.
3. Opening of a new Art and Event Plaza at Kala Nagar
MMRDA is also set to open a new Art and Event Plaza at Kala Nagar. The facility has been developed on a 10,500-square-metre plot located near the junction of the Western Express Highway and Sion-Dharavi Road, close to the entrance of BKC. The plaza includes a 100-seat amphitheatre, spaces for mobile food trucks, shaded seating areas, lawns, walking paths and open plaza spaces. The various sections of the plaza are connected through landscaped pathways.
4. Launch of the Golden Nest Flyover in Mira-Bhayandar
The Golden Nest Flyover in Bhayandar is another project scheduled for opening. The 1.1-kilometre structure forms part of the double-decker Metro 9 corridor. The flyover underwent modifications following complaints and safety concerns. Instead of opening all four lanes immediately, authorities have blocked the left-side lane leading towards Bhayandar. Additional road signs, safety markers and guidance systems have also been installed before the flyover's opening.
5. Reopening of the Monorail
Mumbai Monorail services have remained suspended since September 2025. Operation was stopped after technical issues during the previous monsoon season. Repair work has since been carried out. Officials said the final round of safety inspections by retired Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) P.S. Baghel is nearly complete. The project is now awaiting the required safety certificate before services can resume.
