Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, August 24, announced that the Japanese government and their agencies are willing to support the Versova Virar Sea Link (VVSL) project in Mumbai. Fadnavis was on a 5-day state tour of Japan. On the fourth day, he met Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, in Tokyo, where discussions centered around the upcoming Versova Virar Sea Link (VVSL) project in the suburbs of the city.

Nishimura commended the Maharashtra government for its proactive approach in clearing hurdles and expediting projects such as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Mumbai Metro (Line 3), and the Bullet Train. He referred to these projects as the "growth engine" of India. He also expressed Japan's readiness to provide the necessary support for the VVSL project.

The VVSL project will create a 43-kilometre, eight-lane elevated road along Mumbai's western shore. It will connect Versova, in the city's western suburbs, to Virar, a satellite city near Mumbai. This mega-project has already received cabinet approval. It has an estimated cost of approximately INR 63,426 crore.

During his visit, DCM Fadnavis also held meetings with key figures in Japanese industries and government agencies. This included Nakazawa Keiichiro, Senior Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Hisahiro Nishimoto, Group Vice President of Mitsubishi Electric, and Atsuko Nishigaki, Vice Governor of the Ishikawa Prefecture.

Furthermore, Nakazawa Keiichiro announced JICA's preparedness to fund the Mumbai Flood Mitigation Project. It will reduce fatalities and property damage caused by flooding. This initiative is also crucial in preparing Mumbai for the challenges posed by global warming.
