The Nagpur Metro's unique section, in which the metro train zips through the fourth floor of a 20-storeyed commercial building is now operations. This is a first of its kind for India. This stretch between Sitabuldi-Zero Mile-Kasturchand Park is about 1.6 km.

The inauguration was done by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday afternoon. Chief Minister and Puri had joined the programme through a video link.

The trio later opened the Freedom Park and Kasturchand Park Metro Stations.

Commenting on the launch, The CM said the Zero Mile and the Freedom Park stations are a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. He further went on to add that, “The 20-storey station building will inspire other cities also to do something bigger in a competitive spirit. Maha Metro Chief Brijesh Dixit should also ensure that the part below should also look as good as the elevated corridor.”

This link is a part of the orange line that is already functional in Nagpur from 6.30 am to 8 pm. The project has been designed by a French architect. With the integration of this new stretch, the metro will run at the sixth-floor level in the building that will have a symbolic presentation of the Zero Mile.

At this event, Thackeray also made mention of the ongoing issue between Gadkari and the Thackeray government.

Thackeray at the inauguration event said that “I will not let anyone come in the way of development and people’s works. This was late Balasaheb Thackeray’s teaching that you have inculcated as much as I have".

He was referring to the recent letter by Union Minister for Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Shiv Sena workers “hampering the work” on the national highway stretches passing through Washim district. in a response to this, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray made it clear that he will not allow anyone to come in the way of development.

Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, Dr Vikas Mahatme, Member of Rajya Sabha, Krupal Tumane, Member of Parliament, Ramtek, and Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis, local legislators were also present at the time of inauguration.

On the same day as the metro inauguration, CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray also inaugurated a well-equipped Children’s COVID-19 Center in Mumbai.
