In a major relief to Mumbai local train passengers, the Western Railways (WR) has opened the new Charni Road North Foot Over Bridge (FOB) for passengers on Monday, November 7. This FOB will ensure convenience and smooth movement of passenger traffic at the station, said railway officials.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) managed to complete the work in just 28 days. As per reports, the bridge was closed on October 5, work began on October 9 and it was completed on Sunday, November 6.

WR in an official statement mentioned that new north FOB at Charni Road was commissioned by MRVC in March 2022. However, it was dismantled after nearly six months. It provided a linkway and staircase connecting between new North FOB and landing of the existing FOB at Platform 2/3 North (Mumbai Central) end of Charni Road station.

The length of the linkway is 20 metres and that of the staircase 25m. The width of both is 3.25m.

There are a total of 3 FOBs at Charni Road station, of which the north and middle FOBs were closed for repairs and reconstruction.

As a result, commuters using platforms two and three had to walk all the way to the Churchgate-end platform to exit the station.

The railways had given 45-50 days to the contractor to finish the demolition and construction of the new linkway and FOB, but it was completed well ahead of time by carrying out the work round the clock.

The work is part of the railways’ efforts to revamp the Charni Road station and upgrade its passenger amenities.

Apart from this, the restoration work will cover the railway booking office, booking store, station master’s office, chief booking supervisor’s office, and ticketing windows among other areas of the station.
