The Z bridge connecting Matunga station on the Central Railway (CR) and Matunga Road station on the Western Railway has remained closed for a year. Commuters and locals are unhappy with the delay. The bridge is now in its final stage of renovation and is expected to open by February 15. Railway officials have stated that the new structure is wider and larger.

As per reports, the new structure is slightly bigger and higher than the previous one. It is built with modern technology. Unlike the old bridge, it does not directly face the railway workshop.

The new bridge will also have a roof and better lighting. Stronger night lights with improved lux levels have been added to prevent accidents. This was not part of the original BMC plan but was included because of crane activity in the Matunga workshop area.

For nearly a century, the Matunga carriage workshop of Central Railway stood next to the old open-air bridge. The structure allowed people to see inside the workshop. It was also famous for ghost stories and was featured in Bollywood films like Seeta Aur Geeta. Pedestrians often faced dangers from speeding cyclists. At night, the bridge used to be occupied by urchins.
