On Wednesday, February 28, the third open web girder of the Road Under Bridge (RUB) over the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was successfully launched. The operation was part of the Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor, which is currently under construction. It was completed in a record time of two hours.

The RUB includes four 61-metre open web girders for upward as well as downward railway lines. It runs over the Pune Expressway. Once completed, the project is expected to cut down the travel time between CSMT and Karjat by nearly 30 minutes.

The launch of the girder on February 28, 2024, was the result of careful scheduling and execution. The complete plan was made with the help of some agencies. These included the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the state traffic police department. The operation was completed within the sanctioned three-hour traffic block, starting at 11.10 am.

The 250-tonne girder was opened by 140 workers using 18 hillman rollers, wire ropes, etc. Safety was also taken into consideration. There were also extra tools, hydrants, a backup team, and medical staff present on-site. To manage the traffic, 35 to 40 traffic police were also deployed.

Reports suggest that the launch of the final girder may happen in the next month. The project is expected to complete by December 2025. The complete Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor will reduce the travel time between CSMT and Karjat by half an hour.
