The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has decided to extend one lane on each side of the Mumbai-Pune expressway to deal with traffic and congestion issues on this route.

A proposal has been shared by the transport body to the Central Government for final approval. As soon as it gets approval, the construction of additional lanes will start. A senior officer of 'MSRDC' said that an expenditure of around INR 5,000 crores is expected for this.

After the construction of two new lanes, the traffic congestion will be reduced and the journey will also be faster. About 60 to 70 thousand vehicles are transported on Pune-Mumbai Expressway every day. On Saturdays and Sundays, this number increases to 90,000.

Day by day the increasing number of vehicles, rise in the number of accidents and the resulting traffic jams hinder the travel on this route. Considering these difficulties, MSRDC has decided to extend one lane on both sides of the expressway.

Currently, the route has six lanes (three towards Mumbai and three towards Pune). Now it will increase by one lane each. This development came after 21 years of constructing the 94-km expressway in 2002 to connect Mumbai and Pune, known as the fastest cities in the state. At the time when this route was built, the number of vehicles was less.

Besides, 10 new tunnels will also have to be constructed on this route. Existing tunnels will not be extended.

MSRDC has some sites in its possession, while some more sites in villages have to be acquired. Flyovers will be constructed in place of accident-prone areas. Currently, 11 flyovers are also proposed to cover maximum black spots on the old highway.
