Shiv Sena on Monday asked the Central Government to grant a NOC (No Objection Certificate) for the transfer of the decommissioned aircraft carrier Viraat so that it could be converted into a museum.

Sena MP and spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote a letter to the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh saying, “Viraat’s preservation is well merited and deserving of strong consideration. It can be saved if the Government of India so desires. I am certain that the Maharashtra Government will be ready to cooperate in restoring and preserving the historic ship.”

Aircraft carrier Viraat is currently being dismantled at Alang in Gujarat, and the letter requests the NOC so that it can be brought back to the city.

“It would be a crying shame if we let go our history without giving the benefit of knowledge to our future generation,” the letter also said.

“Granting the NoC would help save the ship. We must use our decommissioned naval ships to help citizens better understand the significance of India’s maritime history,” Chaturvedi added.

Viraat was decommissioned by the Indian Navy in 2017 while it was sent near the coast of Alang for dismantling in September this year. Shortly after being decommissioned, it was purchased by Shree Ram Group for ₹38.54 crores at an auction in July 2020. Viraat also has the honour of being the world’s longest-serving warship.

The Union Government said during a parliament session in July 2019 that the decision to scrap Viraat was taken after talks with the Indian Navy. Back in 2014, INS Vikrant was dismantled in Mumbai. The Defence Ministry is yet to officially comment on the matter, though a response should be coming soon.
