Aarey Conservation Group to file complaint against MMRC for illegal construction in Aarey

The Natinal Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned any construction work, yet MMRC is doing the same, alleged Aarey conservation groups. Both the groups and local people have decided to file complaints against MMRC

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has passed an order which states that any kind of construction or tree felling in Aarey forest is banned. Despite the orders, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has been working on a metro car shed in Aarey for the last five days. Save Aarey member Amruta Bhattacharya said that they are now planning to file a complaint against MMRC’s illegal construction.

Petitioner and Vanshakti organisation’s founder Stalin Dayanand told Mumbai Live that MMRC officials have been working illegally near Aarey’s Unit no. 19. He added that this is illegal and MMRC is breaching the NGT order. He said that in next hearing, he will submit affidavit mentioning the same.

Bhattacharya said that in order to stop the ongoing illegal work, local people, as well as environment-friendly groups, are planning to file complaints against MMRC by June 5, 2018.

We are not breaking any law. We have been asked not to discard debris and cut trees in Aarey. They have nowhere mentioned that we should not construct,” Ramanna, Senior Official, MMRC.
