In order to keep the wheels of local trains running and to ensure uninterrupted services during the monsoon, Railways have taken on several pre-monsoon preparatory works. Every year, Mumbaikars witnessed water-logging across the city, including railway tracks, disrupting the services.

Owing to this, the Western Railways (WR) has undertaken the cleaning of garbage along the tracks over the Mumbai Suburban section which is a massive task. Also included are works such as cleaning of culverts, desilting of side drains, installations of high power pumps, special maintenance of infrastructure etc.

This year, WR officials stated that they are committed to provide smooth travel for its passengers. All works related to monsoon preparedness is being carried out so as to provide disruption free service during the monsoon to the commuters.

WR is taking all steps for smooth flow of water and ensure that there is no stagnation of water or flooding of tracks. The muck and garbage collected during the cleaning process are being cleared and removed with the help of special muck trains. Sustained efforts in infrastructure upgradation and monsoon related works have improved the suburban operations in past few years and WR has been able to reduce the hours of disruption due to heavy rainfall.

According to a statement issued by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, to gear up for monsoon season, pre–monsoon works are being undertaken extensively for giving more access to storm water and to curb flooding which included cleaning the railway tracks of muck and garbage. The garbage and debris lead to waterlogging on the tracks as it obstructs the flow of rainwater sideways. It also results in accumulation of water on tracks. The muck and garbage cleaned are packed in gunny bags which were then loaded onto the muck special train & BRNs.

Currently, one muck special & 12 BRN wagons are being used over Mumbai Suburban section to collect muck from tracks. In addition to this, one Poclain and 4 JCB machines are also operated to remove the muck from the tracks. Western Railway has identified 106 locations where garbage dumping by outsiders has been noticed which affects the stormwater drainage system.

The waste materials and garbage which are being dumped by outsiders on railway tracks are choking up the drainage, pipeline & culverts, which hinders the smooth flow of storm water at many locations. It is pertinent to mention that during the year 2021-22, 1.60 lakh cubic metres of muck/garbage were cleared from the tracks in suburban section and a significant portion of the muck is cleared taking advantage of the maintenance block operated on Mumbai Suburban sections.

Keeping in line with Western Railway’s “Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat” initiative, it ensures to keep its surroundings clean and healthy. Railways appealed to the public to maintain hygiene and not to pollute or throw waste materials on the tracks. Cleaner and safer environment is possible only with the concerted efforts of the public and Railways.
