Mumbai- The state government seems keen to put the brakes on the happiness of tipplers on New Year's eve.
Mumbaikars who are busy planning for the New Year celebrations were in a for a rude shock when the state excise department announced that  5 star restaurants or restaurants on the highways on the city's outskirts will not get liquor permits for  New Year parties. Till now, state excise department has received 500 applications for such permits, according to Pradeep Pawar, Deputy Commissioner, state excise department. It is estimated that the count will go up to 800 applications in the next two days. This order of the excise department follows a Supreme Court directive to ban selling liquor near the highways, in a bid to curb drink and drive accidents. Those violating these instructions are liable to be severely punished.
