More than 88 countries of the world celebrated 'World Sleep Day' today, March 17. On this occasion many events were organised in Mumbai as well.

In today's fast-paced and technology-driven world, people's lifestyles have completely changed. People still do not understand the need and importance of adequate sleep. Lack of sleep leads to various diseases.

According to an observation made by Apex Hospital Group, it has been revealed that Mumbaikars traveling by local trains sleep an average of three hours a week and 12 hours a month. Today there are lakhs of citizens who come directly from Palghar, Virar, Dahanu as well as Karjat, Kasara and Panvel, Navi Mumbai to Mumbai for work. Citizens spend five to seven hours a day traveling to/fro, hence they do not get enough sleep. Therefore, commuters utilise the time to compensate for the lack of sleep during their journey to keep them fresh and ready for the daily errands.

Giving more information about this, ENT and Voice Surgeon - Laryngologist Dr. Binhi Desai said, "Sleep is essential for human survival. Excess substances accumulate in the brain after working throughout the day. Through sleep, these extra unnecessary substances are cleared by the brain. If this process is not carried out properly, it accumulates in the brain and affects memory. A normal person needs 7-8 hours of sleep every day, while children need 10 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep or not getting enough sleep is the first sign of your poor physical and mental condition. Today, many citizens come to work in Mumbai. It takes two to three hours to travel just like the journey back home is the same, so Mumbaikars have got the habit of sleeping while traveling and there is nothing wrong with it. It is a comforting thing if Mumbaikars are getting some sleep in the local train during the journey due to the chaos of work."

Apex Hospital Group organised a workshop on the importance of sleep for good health and the consequences of not getting it. In this workshop, ENT and Voice Surgeon - Laryngologist at Apex Superspeciality Hospital on insufficient sleep and various mental and physical diseases caused by it. Guided by Binhi Desai.
