Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar on Monday announced that his party will not field its candidate to contest the Mumbai Mayor elections scheduled on November 22.

In a rather expected twist, Shelar took to Twitter to inform that BJP doesn’t have the number in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and will not ally with any opposition party while terming its 35-year-old ally Shiv Sena as "opposition".

...BJP doesn’t have the numbers and is in minority in the BMC. (BJP) will not ally with any opposition party and will contest BMC elections in 2022 when they have the numbers,” BJP leader Ashish Shelar tweeted.

BJP Group leader in BMC, Manoj Kotak also declared that his party will not contest the upcoming Mumbai Mayor elections.

With this, BJP officially pulled out of the Mumbai Mayor election race. This happened amid the fallout of Shiv Sena from BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Shiv Sena and BJP headed for a huge tussle over power-sharing after the declaration of assembly election results in Maharashtra. After Shiv Sena and BJP alliance failed to form the government, the President’s rule was imposed in the state.

Now, the NCP-Congress alliance is working out to form a stable government with Shiv Sena.

According to sources, NCP and Congress have extended their support to Shiv Sena for the Mumbai Mayor elections while Congress has asked for Deputy Mayor post in the BMC.

However, there has been no official announcement regarding the same. Mumbai NCP President Nawab Malik on Sunday said that Congress-NCP alliance will field candidates in the upcoming Mayor elections and there have been no talks with Shiv Sena regarding the same.
