Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections that are to be conducted in 2022, all the parties in the state have reportedly started their preparations regarding the same.

While it is being speculated that the Shiv Sena along with the NCP will contest the elections together, Congress has reportedly been signalling to the BMC that it is to contest the elections alone in 2022. Meanwhile, the BJP has initiated the “Aapke Dwar” campaign under which the MLAs of the party will now visit different areas of their assembly constituencies in order to meet the people and address their grievances.

On the other and, earlier former Shiv Sena MLA from Bandra East Trupti Sawant joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Pravin Darekar. Trupti is the wife of the late Prakash Sawant, popularly known as Bala Sawant, who was considered close to the late Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray.

This development, ahead of the BMC elections, is being seen as a move to challenge the ruling MVA government-led by Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray.

During the Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2019, Trupti Sawant was expelled from the Shiv Sena, reports suggested. She wasn’t given a ticket to contest in the elections by the Shiv Sena. Trupti Sawant then announced that she will be contesting as an independent candidate in the elections. After that, she was subsequently expelled from the party.
