During an interview, Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam called Prime Minister Narendra Modi “illiterate”, sparking a massive row. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Friday protested outside Nirupam’s residence over his remarks.

Earlier, Maharashtra Education Department issued a verbal order to screen a national award-winning film, based on PM Modi’s life, directed by Mangesh Hadwale. The film was to be screened in state’s Zila Parishad schools. However, the idea did not fit well with Congress and it opposed the same.

While criticising the state education department, Nirupam said that the motive to screen this film is politics and schools, children should be kept away from politics. PM Modi is “illiterate” and “Gawar”, nobody is sure about Modi’s qualification, Nirupam further said.

Amid a massive uproar over the issue, State Education Minister Vinod Tawde clarified that he did not order any school to screen any film based on PM Modi’s life.
