The corruption allegations against state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh have sparked a political slugfest in Maharashtra with opposition leaders demanding his resignation.

On Monday afternoon, March 22, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, in a press conference backed the Home Minister and said that Singh made these allegations after being moved out of the Mumbai top post. He is just trying to divert attention from the investigation into the Mukesh Ambani security scare case.

Meanwhile, Param Bir Singh has approached the Supreme Court, seeking an impartial and fair investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the various corrupt malpractices of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. He has also challenged his transfer to Home Guards, ordered by the Maharashtra government last week over lapses into the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare case.

Here are the latest updates in this case:

  • Sharad Pawar said that Anil Deshmukh was in the hospital from February 5 to 15 and from February 15 to 27, he was in home isolation in Nagpur. Singh had alleged that the arrested Mumbai cop Sachin Vaze had met the Home Minister around this time. "We will share all these records with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The question of resignation does not arise now," Pawar said.
  • Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut backed NCP chief Sharad Pawar's stand and said that the allegations need to be probed. "Anil Deshmukh and NCP chief said that the contents of 'letter bomb' should be probed, CM should probe it. If the government is ready to accept the challenge of probing this, then why is the issue of resignation being raised repeatedly? Raut said.
  • Republican Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale on Monday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding to bring President's Rule in Maharashtra. BJP MP Girish Bapat said that the law and order situation in Maharashtra has deteriorated and the present scenario calls for the imposition of the President's rule in Maharashtra.
  • Raut further warned that 'if someone is attempting to get President Rule imposed in Maharashtra by misusing central agencies, then I am warning them - you yourself will get burnt in that fire'.
  • Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, Hemant Nagrale called on Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari at Raj Bhavan, earlier today.
  • Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh held a meeting with Maharashtra ATS Cheif Jai Jeet Singh today.
  • Shiv Sena MPs walked out from Lok Sabha today, amid the raising of the Maharashtra issue in the House.
  • In a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, he had last week said that Deshmukh had led an extortion racket with the now-suspended policeman Sachin Vaze, a Shiv Sena member. He said that the Home Minister had asked the police to collect INR 100 crores every month and meddled with cases. Deshmukh has now threatened to sue him for defamation.
