Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis defended his visits to districts in Maharashtra amid the coronavirus pandemic saying that it was his duty as the Opposition leader to see the ground situation.

Denying that his visits are political, Fadnavis said that he was trying to reach out to people and lend his support to those suffering during these troubled times. The former Chief Minister was on a two-day visit to Jalgaon, Nashik and Aurangabad districts in north Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, visited Thane district earlier to take stock of the COVID-19 situation and also met Vipin Sharma, the newly appointed Commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

The opposition has questioned Fadnavis’ visits to the districts. “If someone likes to sit at home it is their problem but as LoP it is my duty to see the ground reality and extend my support to the people,” the BJP leader said.

While asserting that his tour was not political, Fadnavis said that they are reaching out people to help them in troubling times. LoP in Maharashtra legislative council, Praveen Darekar has also been accompanying Fadnavis in his visits.

Referring to the death of COVID-19 patient at Jamner taluka due to unavailability of the ambulance, Fadnavis said that adding beds in hospitals will not solve the problem but overall medical infrastructure needs to be developed.

Fadnavis' visit came at a time when Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope and state Industries Minister were scheduled to hold a review meeting with top officials in Aurangabad.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, Darekar’s vehicle met with an accident while it was moving towards Jalgaon on the Mumbai Agra Highway. As per officials, the LoP was unhurt and continue his journey after a brief halt.

Fadnavis and Darekar were visiting the village in Jalgaon district to pay their homage to former BJP MP Haribhau Jawale who died due to COVID-19.
