The Dutt legacy continues with Congress candidate Priya Dutt contesting from Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency. Daughter of renowned actor and politician Sunil Dutt, and mother of two children, Priya Dutt was elected as an MP twice - in the year 2005 and 2009.

Dutt (52) is not only recognised as a politician but a social worker too. After completing her undergraduate in Sociology from Sophia college, Priya Dutt went on to study television production from Centre of Media Arts in New York.

Political Career

Coming from a family of renowned actors, Priya Dutt chose social work and politics over anything else. She was first elected as an MP from Mumbai North-West LS seat on Congress ticket in the year 2005. After delimiting the constituencies, Dutt was elected as an MP again from Mumbai North-Central constituency.

However, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Poonam Mahajan defeated Priya Dutt in 2014 general election by a margin of 1.86 lakh votes. Priya Dutt served as the Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Social Work

Taking inspiration from her parents, Priya Dutt was wholly indulged in the practice of social work and made it her identity. Dutt has raised her voice on women issues including legal recognition to prostitution and reservation for women in parliament. Dutt has dedicated her time to work in health and other crucial sectors.

In the News

After Sanjay Dutt was arrested for possession of arms during the Mumbai bomb blasts which happened in the year 1993, the same affected Priya Dutt’s image and stance in the public too. Dutt was questioned, sometimes brutally, by the opposition and the media regarding the same.

Earlier, Priya Dutt had said that she won’t contest the Lok Sabha poll due to the internal conflict in Mumbai Congress. However, after the intervention of top brass leaders, Dutt agreed to contest the same and filed her nomination.
