The voting is underway in 29 civic bodies across Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). 

Voting for all municipal corporation elections began on Thursday at 7:30 am amidst tight security, with voters queuing up in long lines at various polling stations across the state.

As of 3.30 pm, Mumbai saw 41.08% voter turnout. In the 2017 BMC polls, Mumbai had recorded its highest voter turnout since 1992, with a total voting percentage of 55.28 per cent. 

According to official data, ward number 114 in suburban Bhandup recorded the highest turnout at 53.34 per cent, while ward number 227 in the Colaba area of south Mumbai reported the lowest turnout at 15.73 per cent.

The voting is taking place across 227 wards in Greater Mumbai. The BMC polls are taking place after a gap of nine years. The last election took place in 2017.

The counting of votes will begin on Friday, January 16, at 10:00 am. 

BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani told reporters that due to the short gap between polling and counting, the counting of votes for all civic wards will start at 10 am on Friday. This could result in the declaration of results later than usual. It may take an hour longer than usual, he clarified.
