A controversy has erupted in Mumbai’s Colaba area after photographs of BJP leaders, including Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, appeared on a hearse van provided for funeral services, drawing criticism from citizens and social media users.
The hearse van, introduced for residents of the Colaba Assembly constituency, carries images of Rahul Narwekar along with other members of the Narwekar family, including corporators Makarand Narwekar, Harshita Narwekar and Gauravi Shivalkar. Photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are also displayed on the vehicle.
The use of political photographs on a vehicle meant for funeral processions has sparked debate, with several citizens questioning the need for political publicity in sensitive and emotional situations such as last rites and bereavement. Critics on social media have described the branding as inappropriate and excessive, arguing that essential public services should not be used as platforms for political promotion.
Hearse vans are often provided by social organisations, trusts and elected representatives as a public service in many parts of Mumbai. However, the display of prominent political imagery on such vehicles has reignited discussions around the growing trend of branding public welfare services for political visibility.
The issue has led to calls from citizens for clearer norms governing the use of political advertisements on public-service vehicles, with many arguing that services such as ambulances, bus shelters and hearse vans should remain free from political publicity.
