As the term of Governor Ramesh Bais ends on July 28, a new Governor will be appointed in the state. Governors appointed in the Modi-1 government were not given extension. This makes it less likely that the current governor will be given another chance.
Ramesh Bais was appointed as the Governor of Tripura on July 29, 2019. Bais was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand on 14 July 2021 after serving as the Governor there for two years. Pawne served as Governor of Jharkhand for two years. Bais was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra in February 2023. Since Bais was appointed as the governor in July 2019, his tenure as governor is coming to an end on July 28. Although the term of governor is five years, he can continue in office till the assent of the President.
After the five-year term of the governors appointed in 2014 when the Modi government came to power, no one was given an extension. Five years later, a new governor was appointed. Against this backdrop, there is little chance of extension of term for other governors including Ramesh Bais, whose term is expiring. Some who held ministerial posts in the Modi government were denied re-candidacy in the Lok Sabha elections. Some of them are likely to be appointed as governors.
Even if the term ends, they can remain in office!
Governors are not relieved of their responsibility immediately after the expiry of their five-year term. According to the third sub-section of Article 156 of the Constitution, the outgoing Governor can continue in office even after the expiry of the term until the new Governor assumes office. Due to this, if there is a delay in the appointment of the new governor, Ramesh Bais can continue in the post until the new governor assumes office.
