Posters featuring the image of Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor, alongside former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi chief Prakash Ambedkar were put up on Wednesday night, June 21, in Mahim. The incident is currently under investigation. However, the Mumbai Police have reported that no complaints have been filed thus far.

The incident has ignited a heated debate in the state. The billboards appeared overnight, and the identity of those responsible remains unknown.

Deepak Kesarkar, a Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena leader, publicly commented on Uddhav Thackeray's newfound liking for Aurangzeb. Kesarkar expressed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj would not tolerate any compromise with Hindutva, or Hindu nationalism.

Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, had previously emphasised that Aurangzeb does not hold any significance for Indian Muslims. Fadnavis underlined that nationalist Muslims do not consider Aurangzeb their leader and that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the only legitimate ruler respected by Muslims. Fadnavis also clarified that Aurangzeb and his family were outsiders.

Earlier on June 8, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, offensive social media content referencing Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan surfaced. Several young individuals were responsible for posting the content. This led to an increase in communal tensions within the region.
