Former Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, along with Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee president Eknath Gaikwad, and other members of the party carried out a Vrukshpujan ceremony in Aarey.

People of Mumbaikars along with activists have been protesting to save Aarey after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Tree Authority gave nod to cut 2,700 trees in Aarey colony to construct a car shed for the Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) project. It has been almost three weeks since people have been protesting against cutting of these trees. Even on this Sunday, citizens formed a human chain to show their solidarity in saving Aarey. Several celebrities have also joined the “Aarey Bachao (Save Aarey)” movement.

Even, Yuva Sena chief and Uddhav Thackeray's son - Aditya Thackeray - has also openly come out in protest against the potential felling of trees in Aarey.

Sanjay Nirupam and Aarey Protest

Back in April,  Sanjay Nirupam had openly come out to protest against the cutting of these trees. Right before the Lok Sabha elections, Sanjay Nirupam had resigned from the post removed from the post of President of Congress Party. Post this, he had diverted all his energies in the upcoming elections. However, he was unable to make a mark in this election and had not been seen taking an active part in any of the ongoing political matters. Only after, Eknath Gaikwad has replaced Milind Deora as the Congress President, Sanjay Nirupam can be seen actively participating in the political matters.

Sanjay Nirupam asserted that he was amongst the first to raise a voice against this issue and he will continue to protest against the builders getting green lands being handed over the builders.
