In recent developments, the ruling allies in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government are at loggerheads over the renaming of the Aurangabad city.

As per reports, the Congress has opposed the proposal of renaming the Aurangabad city after Sambhaji Maharaj, while the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has termed it as a ‘fixed fight’.

In view of the ensuing civic polls in Aurangabad, the Shiv Sena party spearheaded by CM Uddhav Thackeray has brought up the old issue of the renaming of the city as Sambhaji Nagar. The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation had earlier passed the original proposal. The BJP too had supported the proposal and issued a notification during the Sena-BJP alliance government. However, the proposal was challenged by a Congress corporator in the High Court and later in the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, in the midst of the row between the parties, Raj Thackeray-led MNS waded into this debate on Saturday, January 2. Moreover, Senior MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar stated that his party has no problem with either the Centre or the state taking the credit for renaming Aurangabad. However, he alleged that Shiv Sena was adopting an approach that is hypocritical.

In order to elucidate his point, he referred to the Maharashtra Minister Abdul Sattar's statement that CM Uddhav Thackeray has "allowed" him to use Aurangabad instead of Sambhajinagar. Sattar had switched over from Congress to Shiv Sena before the 2019 Assembly election and subsequently won from the Sillod constituency. In addition, Nandgaonkar called upon the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra to honour the late Balasaheb Thackeray's word and change the name of Aurangabad.
