Nifty Ends Below 14,400, Sensex Slips More Than 800 Points

The benchmark indices slipped close to 2 per cent as the COVID-19 cases spike in the country. Realty, Auto, Bank and Energy stocks worst hit.

At close, the BSE Sensex was down 882.61 points or 1.81 per cent at 47,949.42 and the Nifty was down 258.40 points or 1.77 per cent at 14,359.50.

About 723 shares have advanced. 2091 shares declined and 157 shares remain unchanged.

On the Nifty 50 index, Dr. Reddys Labs (1.53 per cent), Britannia (1.25 per cent), Cipla (0.88 per cet), Wipro (0.76 per cent) and Infosys (0.65 per cent) were the top gainers for the day, while Adani Ports (-4.57 per cent), Power Grid Corp (-4.12 per cent), ONGC (-3.96 per cent), Hero Motocorp (-3.78 per cent) and Bajaj Finserv (-3.61 per cent) were the top losers for the day.

On the sectoral front, Nifty PSU Bank & Nifty Realty shed over 4 per cent, while auto, infra, metal and energy indices slipped 1-2 per cent each.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices lost 1.93 per cent and 1.64 per cent respectively.

Author’s View: The index looks sideways with a downwards bias. Trading in stocks will be better over trading in the index.
