Stock Market Highlights: Sensex sinks 740 points

The indices end near day’s low on the March series expiry day. The Nifty closed below 14,400 and Sensex lost 740 points. PSU Bank, Auto and Energy stocks witnessed a heavy selloff.

At close, the Sensex was down 740.19 points or 1.51 per cent at 48,550.12 and the Nifty was down 224.50 points or 1.54 per cent at 14,324.90.

About 748 shares have advanced, 2147 shares declined and 170 shares remain unchanged.

On the Nifty 50 index, Tata Steel (2.90 per cent), ICICI Bank (0.71 per cent), Dr Reddys Labs (0.69 per cent), HDFC Ltd. (0.20 per cent) and JSW Steel (0.15 per cent) were the top gainers for the day, while Maruti Suzuki (-3.95 per cent), IOC (-3.86 per cent), HUL (-3.52 per cent), Coal India (-3.17 per cent) and Bharti Airtel (-3.04 per cent) were the top losers for the day.

On the sectoral front, other than Nifty Metal (0.02 per cent) all other sectoral indices ended in the red. Nifty Pharma and Nifty Bank lost close to 1 per cent each and all the other sectors lost 2 per cent to 3 per cent each.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices lost 2.22 per cent and 1.85 per cent respectively.

Author’s View: Market might stay between 14,300 – 14,700 for a few days. 14,300 is a support level for Nifty and sustenance above this level is important to see bullish targets in the index.
