The Benchmark Indices Give Up Initial Gains To End In Red

Nifty ends below 14,300 and Sensex falls almost half a per cent after the big gap opening in the morning. IT stocks worst hit.

At close, the Sensex was down 243.62 points or 0.51 per cent at 47,705.80 and the Nifty was down 63.10 points or 0.44 per cent at 14,296.40.

About 1603 shares have advanced, 1187 shares declined and 155 shares remain unchanged.

On the Nifty 50 index, Dr Reddys Labs (3.80 per cent), Bajaj Finserv (3.69 per cent), Bajaj Finance (2.99 per cent), HDFC Life (2.89 per cent) and Bajaj Auto (2.43 per cent) were the top gainers for the day, while Ultratech Cement (-4.75 per cent), HCL Tech (-3.35 per cent), HDFC (-3.07 per cent), Grasim (-2.48 per cent) and Shree Cement (-2.45 per cent) were the top losers for the day.

On the sectoral front, Pharma and Auto indices rose over 1 per cent and outperformed the benchmark indices, while the IT index lost more than 1 per cent.

The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rose 0.49 per cent each.

Author’s View: Nifty has a strong base around 14,200 – 14,250 zone. If this level is sustained we might see some bounce or else we may see nifty moving towards the 14,000 level.
