The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is an institution that thrives to work to conserve the heritage sites across the world. On November 9, UNESCO announced the winners of a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award for conservation and restoration project of an aristocratic house in Ladakh won it.

The site was redeveloped from the state of ruins and after its restoration, the project won in the category of Award of Distinction under the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Whereas, the rejuvenation of a university clock tower and fountain in Mumbai received Honourable Mention jointly with a China project.

The Mumbai projects that received the mention were restoration projects of Rajabai Clock Tower of Mumbai University and the Ruttonsee Mulji Jetha Fountain, both of them belonging to the colonial era. Accordingly, renowned conservation architect Vikas Dilawari expressed that the fountain project was a great example of a public-private partnership project.

The project was redeveloped with co-joined efforts from MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) and KGA (Kala Ghoda Authority) to restore the neglected urban landscape.

Meanwhile, he added that one of the major challenges was to restore its water engineering along with restoring the architectural values. The project was funded by KGA, which now looks after the project that was restored by constant efforts for a year.

On the other hand, the renewal of Rajabai Clock Tower and Library has breathed fresh air into the site by conserving the neo-Gothic landmark.
